How Engaged Is Your Board... Really?

I'm Dr. Carrie Gray, nonprofit consultant, strategist, and coach.
Some people call me "The Nonprofit Whisperer."

I've been working for and on behalf of the nonprofit sector for 30 years. And almost every leader I've worked with feels it at some point — something isn’t clicking.

The board shows up… but not always in the way you need. Conversations happen… but things don’t always move forward.

That's why I created The Board Engagement Scorecard. This simple diagnostic tool helps you see exactly where there is a disconnect — and what to do next. You'll get:

  • An easy to use survey to measure your board's engagement

  • An email template to encourage your board's participation

  • A report with your results and customized recommendations on how to best move forward

If your board feels off...you’re not alone.

You might be experiencing:

- Board members who are present — but not fully engaged

- Meetings that feel routine instead of strategic

- Unclear expectations around roles and responsibilities

- Strong individuals…but not a strong board

- A lingering sense that more is possible — you're just not sure what to do.

Here’s what I’ve learned after years of working with nonprofit organizations:

Board engagement isn’t about effort — it’s about clarity, alignment, and structure.

Introducing the
Board Engagement Scorecard

A practical tool designed to give you clarity — not just data.

What We Measure:

A Clear Framework

The Scorecard measures engagement across four critical areas:

- Clarity

- Connection

- Communication

- Consistency

These aren’t abstract ideas — they’re the drivers behind your board's effectiveness.

What You Receive:

A Report You Can Use

You’ll receive a clear, easy-to-understand report that highlights:

- Where engagement is strong

- Where there are gaps

- Where to focus your attention next

No complicated dashboards.

Just insight you can act on.

What Makes This Different:

Insights Beyond Measures

Most board surveys stop at averages.

This one goes deeper.

We highlight where even a small number of board members are having a different experience — giving you visibility into issues that often go unnoticed, but matter most.

The 4C Framework:
Why It Matters

Board engagement doesn’t improve with more meetings or more effort.

It improves when the right elements are in place.

That’s why this Scorecard is built around four drivers:

Clarity — Understanding roles, expectations, and purpose
Connection — Trust, alignment, and shared commitment to mission
Communication — Clear, strategic, and productive dialogue
Consistency — Reliable practices that build momentum over time

When even one of these is missing, engagement suffers.

When all four are aligned, boards become more focused, more strategic, and more effective.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the scorecard take to complete?

About 5–7 minutes per board member. And we typically give boards about 1-2 weeks to complete the Scorecard.

Are responses anonymous?

Yes! Responses are anonymous to ensure honest, meaningful feedback. Only Gray Breakthroughs staff will have access to individual responses and no individual responses will be referenced in the final report.

What happens after my board completes it?

You’ll receive notification that all responses have been submitted and within a week of completion, you'll receive a report highlighting key insights, patterns, and opportunities to strengthen engagement.

Is this a one-time tool or something we can reuse?

Many organizations use it as a baseline and revisit it over time to measure progress. But there is a fee each time you want to use the Scorecard.

Do I need outside support to use it?

No. The report is designed to be clear and actionable on its own. That said, support is available if you want help interpreting results or taking next steps, including coaching and the Board Engagement Accelerator Course.

What if I’m worried about how my board will respond?

We position this as a tool to strengthen how the board works together — not as an evaluation of individuals. That framing typically leads to strong participation and honest responses.

Will you present the findings to my board?

While it's not included in the cost of the Scorecard, a presentation to your board can be scheduled for an additional fee of $400.

What if my board wants to add additional or custom questions to the scorecard?

While the main questions of the scorecard cannot be amended, if you would like to add additional questions to the scorecard, we can work with you on that for an additional fee.

What does it cost?

For an investment of $795, you'll receive a personalized survey link for your organization to complete the Scorecard, an email message template that you can use to promote the Scorecard to your board, and the customized report with the results, key insights, and recommendations for next steps.
